Evaluation of Nerve Function and Neuromuscular Disorders
A Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) is a diagnostic test that measures how well nerves transmit electrical signals to the muscles. This non-invasive procedure helps evaluate nerve damage, compression, or dysfunction, aiding in the diagnosis of conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, peripheral neuropathy, radiculopathy, and neuromuscular disorders. During the test, small electrical pulses are applied to the skin overlying the nerve, and responses are recorded to assess nerve speed and strength. NCS is often performed alongside electromyography (EMG) to provide a comprehensive evaluation of muscle and nerve health. It is particularly useful in detecting nerve injuries, identifying the severity of nerve damage, and guiding treatment plans for patients experiencing numbness, tingling, weakness, or chronic pain. By pinpointing the location and extent of nerve dysfunction, NCS plays a critical role in diagnosing and managing a wide range of neurological conditions.
