Assessing Muscle and Nerve Function
Electromyography (EMG) is a diagnostic test that evaluates the health of muscles and the nerves that control them. This procedure is commonly used to assess muscle weakness, numbness, tingling, and unexplained pain that may be linked to nerve or muscle disorders. During the test, a small needle electrode is inserted into specific muscles to measure electrical activity at rest and during movement. EMG helps diagnose conditions such as radiculopathy, neuropathy, myopathy, and neuromuscular junction disorders like myasthenia gravis. It is often performed alongside a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) to provide a detailed evaluation of nerve and muscle function. By analyzing muscle response, EMG can help determine the cause of symptoms, differentiate between nerve and muscle disorders, and guide treatment plans for conditions affecting movement and strength.
