What is TMS?

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a safe, non-invasive treatment, cleared by the FDA, to help treat depression in patients who have not found relief with standard treatments like antidepressant medications and talk therapy.

TMS works by using short, magnetic impulses to stimulate underactive nerve cells in brain regions known to regulate mood, helping to reset brain chemistry.

What is the treatment like?

It’s done in the office, and each session usually lasts about 20-30 minutes. Treatments are usually performed 5 days/ week for 4-6 weeks, depending on what the doctor determines is the best protocol for you.

You will be seated in a comfortable chair to relax throughout treatment. You will remain awake and alert, no sedation. Y provider will place a magnetic coil on your head. The most common side effects of TMS are short-term scalp discomfort and mild headaches.

After the procedure is finished, you can drive home and resume your normal activities. No down time needed.

Is TMS right for me?

You may benefit from TMS if:

  • You have been diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
  • Your depression symptoms interfere with your daily life
  • Traditional medications to treat depression haven’t worked
  • You cannot tolerate the side effects of your medications

TMS may not be right for everybody, we are happy to discuss with you about the indications for TMS if you have the following:

  • Metallic implants, stents or fragments in and around the head
  • Other electronic implants in the body like a Pacemaker, Spinal Cord Stimulator or Vagus Nerve Stimulator
  • Neurological conditions like epilepsy, seizure disorders, dementia, cerebrovascular disease, increased intracranial pressure, severe head trauma or tumors in the central nervous system

Will insurance cover treatment?

TMS is covered by all major insurance carriers but may require prior authorization dependent on your plan.
